Short Term Forecasts (or Nowcasts) are issued as needed and are
the primary method of communicating plain-language, narrative
forecasts of short-term weather. The product will generally
be valid for the next 1 to 6 hours (depending on the weather
event) and is written in a conversational style that flows
smoothly, and often provides the most important details at the
beginning of the product.
The Short Term Forecast is an event-driven product that was
designed to encompass routine weather to near-severe weather into
a single statement. During active, but non-severe weather,
to increase the visibility of the product, an enhanced
Short Term Forecast may be issued and will include a headline at
the top of the text forecast.
Short Term Forecasts may be issued at any time, especially
during active weather periods, and are issued for single counties,
or small groups of adjacent counties with similar weather
conditions. The product is typically 8 lines or less,
however if the situation merits a longer product, additional lines
may be included after a double ampersand (&&) line.
