The weather generally is not hazardous or severe the majority of
the time. While the primary duty of the NWS is severe
weather watch and warning responsibility, most of the time, we
provide routine weather service, including daily observations and
forecasts, and maintain climatolocial records.
Perhaps the most visible NWS product is the Zone Forecast
Product. Zone Forecasts are routinely issued twice daily
around 200 a.m. to 400 a.m. and around 200 p.m. to 400 p.m.
However, the Zone Forecast may be updated at any time to reflect
changing weather conditions. The forecast covers periods up
to 168 hours and contains sufficient detail to provide a clear
picture of the expected weather conditions in your area.
Typically, each county within a state (except for mountainous
areas in the West) is it's own zone. Often, zones
with similar weather forecasts are grouped together into
geographical regions. The Zone Forecast may contain as few
as three or four groupings for benign weather, and six to eight
groupings or more for very active or rapidly changing weather.
