Different radar data products can be displayed in a four-panel
layout to assess storm structure. In the accompanying figure,
the upper-left (upper-right) panel shows base reflectivity data at the 0.5
(7.5 degree) elevation angle, while the bottom two panels show the
corresponding storm-relative velocity map (SRM) images. Thus, two different
products at two different levels are displayed. Shown is an intense line of
thunderstorms (bow echo) that raced across Hardin and Meade Counties in
north-central Kentucky on May 14, 1995. Widespread straight-line wind
damage (winds up to 100 mph) and two embedded tornadoes resulted in these
counties. A red-green couplet in central Meade County in low-level SRM data
(lower left panel) signified a cyclonic (counterclockwise) circulation
associated with a brief tornado. |
