The Radar Products Generator (RPG) is a
integral component of the WSR-88D Doppler Radar. Inside these
"racks" are various communications, software, and storage
devices. Data is received at NWS Louisville from the Radar
Data Acquisition (RDA/antenna) at Ft. Knox. The data is
processed to create many data fields images that can be viewed
on AWIPS
workstations and the PUP
workstation. Some of the data available is described in the
document "Overview
of the WSR-88D Radar System." A number of software algorithms
create other products as well and check for various data threshold
values. Once these values are met (usually in significant weather
events), alerts are sent to forecasters at the workstations.
Basically, the RPG is the clearinghouse for WSR-88D radar information. Data also can
be archived which is useful in post-storm analysis studies and other
research purposes. A PC is connected to the RPG to monitor system status and
input commands as needed. |
