AWIPS Display: Four-Panel Satellite Image The large window on the AWIPS graphical monitor can be subdivided into 4 panels to allow for even more flexibility and to view more products simultaneously. At left is a 4-panel satellite imagery display. Color-enhanced infrared (IR) imagery is shown on top, a visible picture (available only during daylight) is at bottom left, and a water vapor image is at bottom right. Looking at different satellite image types at the same time can be very helpful in assessing cloud types and levels, cloud growth and decay, and other information. Water vapor imagery not only shows clouds in the atmosphere, but also moisture profiles and flow fields that do not necessary show up as clouds. Thus, the imagery is very useful in the forecast process.
