Satellite imagery, especially animated,
is critical in weather forecasting, particularly in short-term
prediction. AWIPS ingests infrared (IR), visible, and water vapor
imagery. Numerous color "enhancements" can be placed
on satellite pictures to better differentiate cloud types and
levels, cloud growth and decay, and other information. The image
at left shows a color-enhanced IR image. Mid and high-level clouds
are shown over the southeastern United States and across the
Missouri Valley. A thunderstorm complex also appears in Mississippi
with scattered thunderstorms in middle Tennessee and northern
Georgia. Some low clouds appear across Oklahoma. Dark zones normally
represent clear areas. |
