In this image, AWIPS displays 500 mb height values in
contoured (solid lines) and color image formats from the medium-range forecast (MRF) model on a northern
hemispheric projection. The image helps in better data visualization. The overall atmospheric air
flow pattern is shown across the northern hemisphere. Broad troughs
of low heights and ridges of high heights are evident. For example, a ridge
is shown over the western half of the United States, with troughs off the
northwest coast of the United States and across eastern Canada and the
northeastern United States. The data at different model forecast times can be
animated resulting in a movie loop of air
flow patterns in the atmosphere. Understanding the overall flow
helps forecasters interpret trends in individual high and low
pressure systems, and their effect on everyday weather. |
