AWIPS Display: Model Sounding Data This image is an example of a model sounding available in AWIPS. Model soundings are available for any point of interest to the forecaster. A sounding gives a vertical temperature (right bold line on the main display) and moisture (left bold line) profile. A vertical wind profile also is given. The data allows one to assess stability, moist versus dry areas, the degree of vertical wind shear, etc. Soundings also are very important in assessing precipitation type during winter situations. The small diagram in the right part of the image shows a vertical profile of 24-hour temperature change. The diagram at lower left shows a hodograph, i.e., an assessment of wind shear. Finally, values of various sounding parameters are given in the bottom part of the image.
