The following statistics comprises 120 years of data going back to the start of the holiday in 1894. Data collection began at the University of Chicago, then at Midway, and currently at O'Hare which is now the official station for Chicago.

Frequency distribution of high temperatures for Chicago. This dataset shows that the most frequent range of high temperatures on Labor Day is in between 70 and 79 degrees. There is no normal high temperature since Labor Day is not always on the same day. The highest temperature on Labor Day is 97 degrees which occurred on September 6th, 1954. This was one of 9 times in Chicago’s history that the high temperature on Labor Day was in the 90s. The coldest high temperature on Labor Day is 61 degrees which occurred on September 2nd, 1974. In 2013, the high temperature was 79 degrees.

Low temperatures on Labor Day in Chicago
Frequency distribution of low temperatures for Chicago. This dataset shows that the most frequent range of low temperatures on Labor Day is in between 60 and 69 degrees. There is no normal low temperature since Labor Day is not always on the same day. The record low is 44 which occurred on September 2nd, 1946 and September 5th, 1988. The highest low temperature for Labor Day was 75 degrees on September 3rd, 1973. In 2013, the low temperature was 60 degrees.

This dataset shows that the most frequent amount of precipitation recorded on Labor Day is 0.00”, which accounts for 57% of the days in the dataset. The next most frequent range is the 0.02” to 0.25. The highest amount of rainfall on Labor Day occurred on September 2nd, 1912 when 1.49” of rain fell. There have been 6 instances dating back to 1894 where an inch or more of rain fell on Labor Day. In 2013 no precipitation fell.
