January 2nd 2003
Winter Storm

Overview:

The first snowstorm of 2003 moved from west central Missouri to central Illinois on January 1st and 2nd.    The precipitation began as a mixture of sleet and snow over central Missouri during the evening of the 1st, then quickly changed to all snow as it raced into eastern Missouri and southern Illinois.  The heaviest snow fell during the predawn hours of the 2nd, but by mid morning most of the accumulating snowfall had come to an end.  The heaviest snowfall with this storm occurred in a narrow band from near Columbia to near Quincy Illinois. Southern Missouri and Illinois, which received several major snowfalls in December 2002, missed the brunt of this storm.

One of the factors that makes predicting snowfalls for a given location so difficult is the fact that winter storms often produce snowfalls that vary greatly over a very short distance.   This storm clearly demonstrates that fact.   On the northern fringes of the snowfalL, amounts ranged from around an inch in Edina, Missouri, to nearly 8 inches in Quincy, a 7 inch difference in a distance of less than 50 miles!
