Event Assessment:
A warm front brought near record high temperatures in the upper 60s and abundant moisture northward across the region during the night of January 11. Then a powerful cold front plowed across Missouri and Illinois on January 12th bringing a prolonged period of showers and thunderstorms. An additional 1 to 3 inches of rainfall was observed across an already saturated region. Several of the thunderstorms also produced severe weather, including golf ball sized hail and wind gusts greater than 60 mph.

As the cold arctic air filtered southeast, the rain quickly changed to snow during the morning hours of January 13th. Up to 4 inches of snow fell from the Eastern Ozarks through the St. Louis Metropolitan Area and into Central Illinois as the upper level disturbance finally lifted northeast.
