Storm Assessment:
An upper level trough of low pressure ejected out of the southwestern U.S. on December 23rd and lifted northeastward through the Mid-Mississippi Valley Region by Christmas Day, 2002. In concert an area of surface low pressure developed on the evening of the 22nd and moved across the Southern Rockies, deepened over southern Texas through the Gulf Coastal Region by the evening of the 23rd, and lifted northeastward into the Eastern Ohio River Valley area on the 24th.

The combination of the storm through the Southern U.S. and into Ohio Valley Region, along with cold air plunging southward out of Northern Plains, resulted in a swath of snow from southeast Colorado and the north Texas Panhandle, across Southern Kansas, Northern Oklahoma, northwest Arkansas, southern and eastern Missouri, central and southern Illinois through portions of Indiana, Ohio and Southern Lower Michigan. Hardest hit were portions of Northeast Oklahoma, Northwest Arkansas and Southern and Eastern Missouri with up to 12 to 16 inches of snow.
