| Six tornadoes occurred over parts of Eastern Missouri and West-Central Illinois Late Saturday morning of December 27, 2008. In Central Missouri, the first of a series of brief tornado touchdowns occurred at 10:05 am CST in Eastern Audrain County approximately 2 miles west of Laddonia. A grain silo was damaged at this location. The tornado rapidly skipped northeast and damaged a large machine shed about 3/4 of a mile north of Laddonia. The damage track was not continuous while the total length of the damage track was 3.5 miles long. Damage intensity was EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. In Northeast Missouri (Ralls County) another tornado initially touched down at 10:00 am CST 2 miles north of the town of Center near Highway H. Two machine sheds and large tree limbs were damaged by the tornado. The tornado rapidly moved northeast and touched down a second time southeast of the intersection of Homestead and Kingsville Lane's. Three machine sheds and large tree limbs were damaged at this location. The damage was intermittent while the total length of the damage track was 4 miles. Damage width was 30 yards wide and damage intensity was EF-0. A second tornado touchdown occurred in Northeast Ralls County approximately 1.5 miles west-southwest of the intersection of U.S. 61 and County Road HH. Tree damage from brief touchdowns occurred along and south of County Road HH. At the intersection of U.S. 61 and County Road HH ... Damage consisted of roof and window damage to two small apartment complexes, road signs, and trees. Additional tree damage was also noted along New London Gravel Road near a historic home where Mark Twain stayed. Total length of the damage track was 1.25 miles while damage width was 30-40 yards. Damage intensity was EF-0. In West-Central Illinois (Adams County) two tornadoes touched down north and northeast of Liberty. The first tornado occurred at 10:30 am CST 2 miles north-northwest of Liberty or 0.5 miles east of the intersection of Highway 104 and County Road 1050. A large machine shed housing bales of hay was completely destroyed with debris blown 1 mile to the north and northeast along a tree line. Some of the larger pieces of metal sheeting were embedded near the tops of the large trees. Four large power poles were snapped near the ground just north of the large machine shed. total damage path of this tornado was 1.2 miles long while the damage width was 30-40 yards wide. Damage intensity was EF-1. A second tornado in Adams County initially touched down 2.5 miles northeast of Liberty at the intersection of County Roads E 2250th and N 1025th. Tree damage was noted at this intersection. This tornado traveled northeast and damaged a small machine shed and several large pine trees. The overall damage path was 1 mile long while the damage width was approximately 30 yards. Damage intensity was rated EF-0. In East-Central Missouri (Lincoln County) another tornado occurred at 11:10 am CST over North-Central Lincoln County approximately 1.5 miles southeast of Davis along and south of Penrod Road. The tornado initially touched down in an open field west of a farmstead and destroyed a two story barn. Roughly 6x6 supports from a two story barn and 2x4 pieces of wood were driven into the ground northeast of the barn. A home about 60 yards to the northeast of the barn was severely damaged. Much of the roof along with the west side of the home was destroyed. The debris from the barn and home was observed 1 mile to the northeast in an open field. Two other homes in a subdivision to the east of the farmstead sustained minor roof damage. Other smaller machine sheds and large tree limbs 1 to 1.5 miles east-northeast of the farmstead sustained varying degrees of damage. The overall damage path length was 1.5 miles while damage width ranged from 30 to 40 yards. Damage intensity was rated the high end of EF-1. In summary, 6 tornadoes occurred over parts of Missouri and West-Central Illinois on Saturday morning, December 27th, 2008. Two tornadoes caused EF-1 damage and the other four caused EF-0 damage. |
