...DAMAGE SURVEY RESULTS FROM UNION TO CHESTERFIELD...

A BOWING SEGMENT WITHIN A LINE OF THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCED
STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE FROM THE CITY OF UNION IN CENTRAL
FRANKLIN COUNTY MISSOURI TO THE CITY OF CHESTERFIELD IN
ST. LOUIS COUNTY MISSOURI. MUCH OF THE DAMAGE OBSERVED
WAS TYPICAL OF A 60 MPH WIND SPEED...WITH BROKEN LIMBS
AND FALLEN SOFT WOOD TREES SUCH AS BLOOMING BRADFORD PEARS.
THERE WERE SEVERAL AREAS OF MORE INTENSE DAMAGE SURVEYED
THAT WOULD INDICATE MICROBURSTS OCCURRED WITHIN THE LARGER
SWATH OF STRAIGHT LINE WIND DAMAGE.

THE FIRST MICROBURST SURVEYED WAS AT THE FIRST BAPTIST
CHURCH LOCATED NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAY 50 AND
HIGHWAY 47 IN UNION. THE ATTACHED BRICK BUILDING HAD THE
MAJORITY OF ITS METAL ROOF PEALED OFF...WITH INSULATION
THROWN DOWNWIND TOWARD THE INTERSECTION OF EAST MAIN STREET
AND HIGHWAY 47. OTHER SMALL TREES WERE OBSERVED TO BE
SNAPPED OFF IN THIS AREA IN ADDITION TO MINOR SHINGLE
DAMAGE TO THE ROOF OF THE CHURCH ITSELF. THE ESTIMATED
WIND SPEED AT THIS LOCATION WAS 70 MPH.

THE SECOND MICROBURST WAS SURVEYED NEAR THE INTERSECTION
OF ST. JOHNS ROAD AND STATE HIGHWAY V...THROUGH WOLF HOLLOW
GOLF CLUB...TO HIGHWAY 100. SIGNIFICANT TREE DAMAGE WAS
OBSERVED WITH MANY PINE TREES TOPPED/SNAPPED ALONG WITH
UPROOTED HARDWOOD TREES. ALL OF THE DAMAGE POINTED IN THE
SAME NORTHEAST DIRECTION WITH WIND SPEED ESTIMATED AT 80 MPH.

THE FINAL MICROBURST SURVEYED WAS TWO MILES NORTH OF VILLA
RIDGE WHERE 18 POWER POLES WERE SNAPPED OR LYING ON THE GROUND
ALONG A THREE QUARTER OF A MILE STRETCH OF OLD HIGHWAY 100
BETWEEN STATE HIGHWAY T AND MARY LANE. THE ESTIMATED WIND
SPEED AT THIS LOCATION WAS 90 MPH.
