Reflectivity Image (0.5°
slice)(left); Storm-relative velocity image (0.5° slice)(right) at 0135 UTC (8:35
PM CDT) from WSR-88D St. Louis (KLSX). The reflectivity image (left) shows a supercell
exhibiting a classic "S" shape configuration. The Weak Echo Region (WER)
signifies the storm's updraft while the Rear Flank Downdraft (RFD) respresents the storm's
downdraft. Large hail (golfball and larger occurred in the region of 60 dBZ
reflectivity and greater (white area - reflectivity). The storm-relative velocity
image (right) shows two circulations: one over northeast Warren-northwest St. Charles
(larger white oval) and the second over far southern Lincoln county (smaller white
circle). The red inverted
triangle represents a Tornadic Vortex Signature (TVS).
| April 10, 2001 Microbarograph (pressure) trace at WFO St. Louis. The pressure jump is associated with an 'internal gravity wave.' The jump is frequently triggered by moving cold fronts or low-level thunderstorm outflows as it impinges upon a stable temperature profile. |
