April 13, 2006 Southern Wisconsin Hailstorm

Thunderstorms with very large hail moved east across southern Wisconsin during the evening hours of April 13, 2006 (840 P.M. to about 11 P.M. or 0140Z to about 0400Z). In the Milwaukee/Sullivan NWS Office’s County Warning Area (CWA) of south-central and southeast Wisconsin, there were numerous reports of hailstones ranging from 1.75 inches to 3.00 inches in diameter. The largest hailstone of 4.25 inches was measured by a State Trooper about 3 miles northwest of Lake Mills in Jefferson County at the intersection of Newville Road and Interstate 94.

The affected area stretched primarily from Iowa County through Dane, Jefferson, Waukesha, and Milwaukee Counties. In addition, large hail fell across the southern parts of Washington and Ozaukee Counties.  There were numerous reports of damage to vehicles, to buildings with vinyl or aluminum siding, to other windows in various kinds of structures, and to pole sheds.  Most of the largest hailstones were produced by a supercell thunderstorm which moved from Iowa County to Milwaukee County.  Supercells are the strongest of the thunderstorms, capable of persisting for an hour or more due to a powerful updraft tower and sufficient veritcal wind shear.

Plot of Hail Sizes Across Southern Wisconsin

If you were wondering what golfball-size, baseball-size, tennisball-size, or softball-size hail will do to vehicles and structures, now you know.  Luckily, large hailstones are not common in Wisconsin.

Additionally, severe thunderstorms with powerful, downburst, hurricane-force, straight-line winds raked the northeast corner of Fond du Lac County and the northern half of Sheboygan County around the midnight hour to 1 A.M. or so.

A number of homes, barns, and other structures were either damaged or destroyed, and power-lines and trees were knocked over.  Peak wind gusts were probably in the 70 to 80 mph range (hurricane-force winds start at 74 mph).  These storms were related to a line of similar (and severe) storms that raked parts of Calumet and Manitowoc Counties.
