This forecast is designed to express the amount of complexity and uncertainty in a particular forecast. It is part of a broader group of scientists studying how to convey uncertainty and probabilistic information in meteorological and hydrological forecasts of both routine and hazardous weather. Our short range forecasts usually have less error than long range forecasts. Uncertainty in forecasts grows the farther out you attempt to forecast. Thus, the error bars grow from just a few degrees in the short term to 5 to 10 degrees in the Day 7 period.
The color coding indicates how much agreement or difference we see in the numerical weather models that help us forecast. When the models are in good agreement, the forecast is usually more accurate. When there are big differences, the chances of forecast error increase.
