Western Dane County Severe Thunderstorm/Flash Flood: August 11, 2002


Synopsis of event:
During the late afternoon hours of Sunday, August 11, 2002 a slow-moving, back-building thunderstorm complex bombarded parts of western Dane County with damaging, hurricane-force winds estimated to 75 mph, hail up to 2.00 inches in diameter (hen egg), and torrential rains up to 4.5 inches. The Pine Bluff area, about 4 miles south of the village of Cross Plains, experienced the strongest part of the storm. At least 100 vehicles sustained hail damage, basedments were flooded, some of the local corn crop was shredded or flattened, shoulder and culvert washouts were reported, and trees and limbs were downed.

Based on severe weather spotter and law enforcement reports, wind damage to trees and hail stones up to 1 inch in diameter were noted in scattered locations between Mazomanie...Cross Plains...and Waunakee. The storm dissapated as it moved east of Madison. Locations southeast of Madison didn't receive a drop of much-needed rain.
