Wisconsin's Winters Can Be Deadly...Be Careful!!
Wisconsin Facts...
Wisconsin typically experiences a variety of weather hazards each winter...
  • Freezing drizzle which coats roads with a sheet of thin ice.
  • Ice storms which coat roads with ice 1/4 inch thick, or more.
  • Dense fog that lowers visibility down to zero in spots.
  • Blowing/drifting snow that lowers visibilities and hampers snowplows.
  • Extreme cold with nighttime temperatures of 25 to 50 below.
  • Low wind chill temperatures that fall to 50 to 75 below zero.
  • Snowstorms that dump heavy snow amounts in excess of 6 inches.
  • Winter storms that combine heavy snow and stronger winds.
  • Killer blizzards that can blind or trap motorists and pedestrians in seconds.
An average of 22,000 reported vehicle accidents occur each winter in Wisconsin, with road conditions described as "snow-covered" or "ice-covered" or "slushy". These accidents result in a yearly average of 70 deaths and 7500 injuries!

Vehicle accidents that result in deaths or injuries can have a significant impact on local communities and their economy.

Wisconsin insurance companies disburse millions of dollars each winter to settle insurance claims.

What You and Your Family Can Do...
  • Catch the latest weather forecast for your travel route from NOAA Weather Radio, commercial TV/radio, or cable TV.
  • If inclement weather is forecast, postpone or cancel your trip.
  • If you must travel, allow for plenty of extra time to reach your destination.
  • Drive with a full tank of fuel.
  • Make sure you have an emergency kit in your vehicle that includes safety aids and dry food.
  • Drive slower during bad weather and don't take any chances.
  • Keep your headlights on during periods of poor visibility.
  • Inform a family member or friend about your travel plans.
  • If you become stranded... stay with your vehicle, open a window a crack, intermittently run the engine and heater, contact someone on a cell telephone if you have one, and tie a red flag on your radio antenna.
