| |
| Wisconsin Facts... |
Wisconsin typically experiences a variety of weather hazards each winter...
- Freezing drizzle which coats roads with a sheet of thin ice.
- Ice storms which coat roads with ice 1/4 inch thick, or more.
- Dense fog that lowers visibility down to zero in spots.
- Blowing/drifting snow that lowers visibilities and hampers snowplows.
- Extreme cold with nighttime temperatures of 25 to 50 below.
- Low wind chill temperatures that fall to 50 to 75 below zero.
- Snowstorms that dump heavy snow amounts in excess of 6 inches.
- Winter storms that combine heavy snow and stronger winds.
- Killer blizzards that can blind or trap motorists and pedestrians in seconds.
An average of 22,000 reported vehicle accidents occur each winter in Wisconsin, with road
conditions described as "snow-covered" or "ice-covered" or "slushy". These accidents result in
a yearly average of 70 deaths and 7500 injuries!
Vehicle accidents that result in deaths or injuries can have a significant impact on local
communities and their economy.
Wisconsin insurance companies disburse millions of dollars each winter to settle insurance claims. |
