August 2, 2009:  Up to Baseball Size Hail West of the Twin Cities

Event Synopsis  |   Storm Reports

 Event Synopsis

After one of the warmer days in weeks for southern Minnesota, thunderstorms rapidly developed during the mid to late evening Sunday across southwest Minnesota.  These evolved east northeast into the southern half of the Twin Cities metro area and eventually into western Wisconsin.  Low pressure had developed during the afternoon in eastern South Dakota and was the primary focus for thunderstorms as it moved across the southern third of Minnesota.  A warm and moist air mass ahead of this low led to significant instability which had built through the day.  As the low approached and thunderstorms developed Sunday night, they fueled on this instability, developing large hail aloft which would eventually fall in several locations.  Baseball size hail was the maximum reported in a storm that exhibited a top to around 60,000 ft.  The storms would continue to be a hail threat and also at times a wind threat as they evolved towards and through the Twin Cities.  They did provide some rainfall to the very dry eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin.  From earlier showers in the day and the evening thunderstorms, the Ladysmith, Wisconsin airport reported 3.43 inches.  Other rainfall reports can be found here.
