...Mississippi River and Illinois River Ice Statement...

Ice cover conditions as of 03/04/14
*******************************************************************
Mississippi River
Much of the Mississippi has from 10 up to 30 inches of ice
from around Dam 1 down towards Dam 22. The thickest of course
was at Lake Pepin where ice depths varied from 23 to possibly
over 30 inches (the 30 inch measurement was from a spot where the
auger bottomed out and did not break through). But even some of the
dams have very significant amounts of ice...for example...there
is 30 inches reported at Dam 1...27 inches at Dam 7...19 inches
at Dam 12...and a whopping 24 inches of jammed ice at Dam 22.
South of Dam 22 the ice is not quite as thick...but even Lock
and Dam 26 (Melvin Price) just a little ways above St Louis was
still reporting 100 percent coverage of 6 inches of stationary ice
just yesterday.

Illinois River System (Chicago/Illinois R)
The Illinois Waterway has quite a bit of ice also...with thicknesses
of about 10 inches in the north...while the south had temporarily
lost some ice a week ago...which is now trying to move back in.

Current conditions as of 03/04/14:
See the comments above for details. We have had lots of ice develop
this year due to a very long stretch of bitterly cold temperatures
with few or hardly any breaks in the overall cold pattern that
began last December.

Outlook for next 7 days:
A warmup of sorts if forecast for mid to late week which will push
temperatures up to around normal for this time of year. Hopefully
this will slow down and possibly start to reverse some of the
continued ice development we have been experiencing lately.
These changes in temperatures though may cause ice movement and
potential jamming...which interested parties should keep a close
watch for in case flooding results.

The next Ice Statement will be released on Tuesday..Mar 11 2014.
