...Mississippi River and Illinois River Ice Statement...

Ice cover conditions as of 03/11/14
Mississippi River
Much of the Mississippi has from 10 on up to 30 inches of ice from
around Dam 1 down towards Dam 20...while a recent shot of warm air
has caused ice to break up and diminish significantly further south
from there.

Illinois River System (Chicago/Illinois R)
The Illinois Waterway still has quite a bit of ice way up north...
with thicknesses up to about 6 inches...but the south appears
to be ice-free now.

Current conditions as of 03/11/14:
See the comments above for details.

Outlook for next 7 days:
Temperatures are jumping all over the place. Highs yesterday
reached into the 50s in Minnesota and 70s in Missouri. But now
today...colder air is rushing back in to northern and central
portions of our region...which will eventually be followed by
another warmup towards the weekend. Based on this...we do not
expect to see much if any new ice development...but there may be
a fair amount of ice movement and possible jamming over the
next several days or more. Interested parties should keep a
close watch in case flooding results from this likely ice action.

The next Ice Statement will be released on Tuesday..Mar 18 2014.
