January Climate Information

The month of January across central and northeast South Dakota as well as west central Minnesota had quite a range in temperatures from southwest to northeast across the region. The additional 9 to 11 inches of snow on top of the already deep snow cover across northeast South Dakota and west central Minnesota played a big role in the much below normal temperatures for this area for January. The average monthly temperatures were from 4 to 8 degrees below normal for locations in northeast South Dakota and west central Minnesota. Central and north central South Dakota had less snowfall for January with monthly temperatures ranging from 1 degree below to nearly 3 degrees above normal.
The large contrast in temperatures from central to northeast South Dakota was due mainly to the snow cover across the eastern part of the region. Snow is highly reflective of sunlight during the day and cools rapidly at night. This helps keep the cold dense air in place over the snow cover making it difficult for warmer air aloft to mix down to the surface.

The coldest day in the month of January came on the 15th when several records lows were set. Temperatures fell into the 20s and 30s below zero with 42 degrees below zero at Aberdeen and 47 degrees below zero at Pollock. The warmest temperatures for the month came at the end for all locations with highs warming mostly into the 40s and 50s.
