Heavy Rainfall and Severe Reports from August 18th

 Event Summary:

A line of slow moving thunderstorms moved across portions of central and northeastern South Dakota during the evening of August 18th.  There were several reports of large hail along with localized areas of very heavy rainfall.  One band of heavy rainfall extended from southern Brown County, eastward along Highway 12 through Webster and Waubay and finally into west-central Minnesota.  A second area of heavy rain fell over portions of northeastern Hughes County and central Hyde County.  Several observers measured rainfall totals in excess of 4 inches!

Local emergency management and county officials report that several roads across southeast Brown County have water running over them or have been washed out. This has occurred in an area near and southeast of Ferney. Two roads are reported as impassable with 10-foot by 8-foot holes created by washed out culverts. Please exercise caution if you have to travel in this area of southeastern Brown County.

Below is a radar estimate of storm total precipitation ending around 9am on August 19th.
