Mobridge hits 100F on June 30th -- and More Heat Statistics!

At 412pm on June 30th, Mobridge hit 100F for the first time since August 13th, 2007.  This high temperature was only 2 degrees shy of the record temperature of 102F set back in 1931.

Several other sites across central South Dakota also came close to reaching 100F on June 30th as well including:

  • Murdo - 98F
  • Timber Lake - 98F
  • Pierre - 97F

Recall that last year, Pierre failed to reach 100F in back to back summers (2008 and 2009).  This had never occurred before at Pierre since records have been kept (records in Pierre date back to 1933).  In an average summer, Pierre would normally record a high temperature at or above 100F about 9 times.  In addition, since 1933, there has only been one other year (1993) when temperatures have failed to reach 100F.  Thus, failing to reach this temperature milestone in two consecutive summers was quite a rare event.  The big question is whether or not Pierre will make it three consecutive summers without reaching 100F?  Statistics would say this is extremely unlikely -- although only time will tell!

A summary of the temperature trends in 2008 and 2009 indicated that the number of calendar days when high temperatures exceeded 90F, 95F or 100F at Pierre, Aberdeen, and Watertown were well below climatological averages (see listings below).

Also listed below are the dates when the temperatures last reached 100F at selected cities in the NWS Aberdeen Forecast area:

  • Aberdeen (102F):  July 7, 2007
  • Pierre (101F): - September 4, 2007
  • Watertown (100F): July 7, 2007
  • Wheaton (100F): - July 8, 2007
  • Mobridge (100F): - June 30, 2010
