Record Breaking Cold and Snowy April

This past April was in the top five coldest on record across central and northeast South Dakota and west central Minnesota.  Record to near record snowfall was also reported.  The information below contains additional monthly records from this past April.

Aberdeen…

The average HIGH temperature in Aberdeen was 45.4 degrees.  This ranks as the second coldest of all-time coldest.  April 1950 is the coldest with an average HIGH temperature of 45.3 degrees.  The warmest is 68.6 degrees set back in 1895.  The average LOW temperature in Aberdeen was 24.3 degrees which broke the previous record of 25.5 degrees set in 1956.  The warmest average LOW temperature is 39.1 degrees set in 1915.   The average temperature was 34.9 degrees this past April.  This broke the previous record of 36.0 degrees set in 1950.  The warmest average temperature is 53.4 degrees set in 1915.  Lastly, Aberdeen saw 21.8 inches of snowfall which ranks second behind the 24.4 inches set in 1970.  There have been a few months of April in which no snow was reported.  The last one was in 2012.

Kennebec…

The average HIGH temperature in Kennebec was 53.7 degrees.  This ranks as the fourth coldest all-time.  April 1995 is the coldest with an average HIGH temperature of 50.9 degrees.   The warmest is 72.3 degrees set back in 1955.  The average LOW temperature in Kennebec was 26.1 degrees which ranks as the second coldest all-time.  The current record is 25.8 degrees set in 1956.  The warmest average LOW temperature is 40.3 degrees set in 1977.   The average temperature was 39.9 degrees this past April which ranks as the coldest all-time.  The warmest average temperature is 54.5 degrees set in 1981.  Lastly, Kennebec saw 24.0 inches of snowfall which ranks second snowiest of all-time.   The snowiest April is in 1995 when 45.5 inches fell.  There have been a few months of April in which no snow was reported.  The last one was in 2012

Pierre…

The average HIGH temperature in Pierre was 49.2 degrees.  This tied as the all-time coldest.  April 1950 is also the coldest.  The warmest is 68.7 degrees set back in 1981.  The average LOW temperature in Pierre was 26.0 degrees which broke the previous record of 27.4 degrees set in 1956.  The warmest average LOW temperature is 40.5 degrees set in 1941.   The average temperature was 37.6 degrees this past April.  This broke the previous record of 40.0 degrees set in 1956.  The warmest average temperature is 54.3 degrees set in 1946.  Lastly, Pierre saw 20.8 inches of snowfall which breaks the previous record of 17.5 inches set in 1986.  There have been a few months of April in which no snow was reported.  The last one was in 2012.

Timber Lake…

The average HIGH temperature in Timber Lake was 49.5 degrees.  This ranks as the seventh coldest all-time.  April 1950 and 1975 are the coldest with an average HIGH temperature of 45.5 degrees.   The warmest is 68.0 degrees set back in 1915.  The average LOW temperature in Timber Lake was 25.2 degrees which ranks second coldest all-time.  The current record is 25.1 degrees set in 1956.  The warmest average LOW temperature is 37.6 degrees set in 1987.   The average temperature was 37.3 degrees this past April which ranks as the second coldest all-time.  The current record is 35.6 degrees set in 1950.  The warmest average temperature is 52.6 degrees set in 1946.  Lastly, Timber Lake saw 9.9 inches of snowfall which does not rank in the top ten.  The snowiest April was in 1970 when 35.6 inches fell.  There have been a few months of April in which no snow was reported.  The last one was in 2012.

Watertown…

The average HIGH temperature in Watertown was 42.7 degrees.  This ranks as the second coldest of all-time.  April 1950 is the coldest with an average HIGH temperature of 41.4 degrees.   The warmest is 67.8 degrees set back in 1987.  The average LOW temperature in Watertown was 24.7 degrees which ranks second coldest all-time.  The current record is 23.4 degrees set in 1928.  The warmest average LOW temperature is 39.7 degrees set in 1941.   The average temperature was 33.7 degrees this past April which ranks as the second coldest all-time.  The current record is 33.5 degrees set in 1950.  The warmest average temperature is 52.4 degrees set in 1987.  Lastly, Watertown saw 17.4 inches of snowfall which ranks second behind the 29.5 inches set in 2008.  There have been a few months of April in which no snow was reported.  The last one was in 2010.

Wheaton, MN…

The average HIGH temperature in Wheaton was 39.9 degrees.  This ranks as the coldest of all-time.  The previous record was 42.1 degrees set in 1950.  The warmest is 70.3 degrees set back in 1987.  The average LOW temperature in Wheaton was 23.6 degrees which is the coldest all-time.  The previous record was 24.7 degrees set in 1920.  The warmest average LOW temperature is 41.1 degrees set in 1915.   The average temperature was 31.7 degrees this past April which ranks as the coldest all-time.  The previous record was 35.2 degrees set in 1950.  The warmest average temperature is 54.7 degrees set in 1987.  Lastly, Wheaton saw 9.1 inches of snowfall which ranks seventh all-time.  The current record is 27.3 inches set in 2008.  There have been a few months of April in which no snow was reported.  The last one was in 2012.

 Several sites in the Aberdeen forecast area experienced their coldest April temperatures in recorded history, which have been publicized in a Public Information Statement from the National Weather Service office.  In addition to these remarkable records, several other significant facts and records have also been reached for the month of AprilRecords were also set for cold temperatures when combining the months of March and April.  As more and more of these records are discovered, it's apparent that Spring thus far has truly been historic and significant.

 

Average Temperature (March - April 2013)

Aberdeen:  27.2 degrees was coldest all-time, beating 28.5 in 1951

Watertown:  26.8 degrees was coldest all-time, beating 27.9 in 1899

Sisseton:  25.8 degrees was coldest all-time, beating 30.7 in 1996

Wheaton:  24.1 degrees was coldest all-time, beating 28.2 in 1951

Mobridge:  30.6 degrees was 3rd coldest all-time.  The record is 29.0 degrees in 1951

Pierre:  33.4 degrees was 4th coldest all-time.  The record is 30.6 degrees in 1951.

Aberdeen:  21.8 inches was 2nd all-time.  The record is 24.4 inches in 1970. 

Watertown:  17.4 inches was 2nd all-time.  The record is 29.5 inches in 2008

Pierre:  20.8 inches was highest all-time, beating the old record of 17.5 inches in 1986

Sisseton:  17.2 inches was 2nd all-time.  The record is 19.0 inches in 1970

Kennebec:  24.0 inches was 2nd all-time.  The record is 45.5 inches in 1995.

* For Aberdeen, every single high temperature for the days of April 11th through April 20th ranked in the top 5 coldest all-time

* The 13 days from April 8th through April 20th in Aberdeen had high temperatures below 40 degrees.  This is the most consecutive days below 40 degrees for any April in recorded history. 

* Watertown had their 2nd coldest April all-time with an average temperature of 33.7 degrees.  The coldest April on record was in 1950 with an average temperature of 33.5 degrees

* Timber Lake had their 2nd coldest April all-time with an average temperature of 37.3 degrees.  The coldest April on record was in 1950 with an average temperature of 35.6 degrees.
