Is Winter 2014 Comparable to the cold Winter of 1977?

Northern Michigan has been very cold so far this season with many days recording temperatures well below normal. This extended period of cold air has aided in the large amount of ice which has formed on the Great Lakes.

So northern Michigan, have you been wondering how this winter stacks up to those in the past. Looking back to 1940, here is a ranking of the Lowest Average Temperatures for the period Dec 1st through Feb 7th.

Can you believe as cold as the Great Lakes have been, this winter to date was not as cold as the winter of 1977.
