Northern Michigan New Years Day Climatology

Northern Michigan New Years Day Climatology

As we wrap up the old year and begin the new, it's always interesting to take a look back at some of the weather extremes that have occurred on New Years Day over the past 100+ years across northern Michigan. Below is a look at the warmest, coldest, wettest, and snowiest New Years Days recorded for various cities throughout the region. As you can see, there is much variability can be seen in the data, indicative of just how changeable winter weather can be this time of year.

In fact, looking over the past 5 years alone shows incredible variability, from the extreme warmth seen in both 2011 and 2007, when temperatures soared through the 40s and even lower 50s, to some modest snowfall events between 2008 and 2009.
