Hurricane Sandy made landfall on the southern coast of New Jersey on the evening of October 29th, bringing widespread coastal flooding and beach erosion, heavy rain, incredible winds (gusting to 80+ mph at times near New York) and snow measured in feet over the higher terrain of West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and Tennessee. A national storm summary of Sandy can be found here, courtesy of the National Weather Service Hydrological Prediction Center. This expansive storm, which had a cloud deck that spanned nearly 1000 miles in diameter, had its impacts felt as far away as Wisconsin and Northern Illinois, with winds gusting upwards of 60 mph. This caused some coastal flooding along the southern Lake Michigan shoreline, as seen in the NWS Chicago’s write-up of the storm which can be found here.
Northern Michigan was not spared from the wrath of this late season tropical cyclone, with the region also experiencing strong winds, high waves and heavy rainfall. The greatest wind impacts were felt along the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron lakeshores, with winds gusting in excess of 50 mph at times last Monday night into Tuesday morning. Winds for inland locations were considerably lighter, gusting in the 30 to 40 mph range. Below is a summary of the higher peak gusts observed across Northern Michigan. Only gusts 45 mph and higher have been included. Not all data listed is considered official. The National Weather Service thanks its private and public partners for providing us with this data.
