May 2013...Above Normal Temperatures Return

 Monthly Highlights:

(1) Temperatures returned to above normal levels for the month, with the warmest temperature anomolies centered across parts of northern lower Michigan.  While hot weather avoided the area, some locations approached 90 degrees for high temperatures on May 30th.  No record setting monthly temperatures were observed, and all locations fell safely below a top ten warmest May.

(2) After a very dry start to the month, rather frequent shower and thunderstorms brought rainfall totals to above normal levels by month's end, especially across northern lower Michigan.  A record setting slow start to the severe weather season finally ended, with severe thunderstorms across parts of northern lower Michigan on the 20th and 30th, producing isolated damaging wind gusts and large hail.

(3) The snowfall season was not quite over as an unseasonably cold airmass brought accumulating snow to eastern upper and interior sections of northern lower Michigan on the 11th and 12th.  The heaviest snows occurred across eastern upper, with Sault Ste. Marie reporting their second snowiest May on record.
