2007-08 Seasonal Snowfall Summary

The 2007-08 snow season officially ended on June 30th.  For much of the area, this snow season will be remembered for its repeated bouts of heavy snow from early December 2007 through mid March 2008.  Thirteen locations in western Wisconsin and two locations in northeast Iowa established new seasonal snowfall records.  The seasonal snowfall ranged from 25.9 inches in Austin, Minnesota to 93.5 inches in Friendship, Wisconsin.

Why was there so much snow this season?

A moderate to strong La Niña (abnormally cold water in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific Ocean) shifted the storm track further northwest than is typical with a La Niña (a storm track from Tennessee Valley to the eastern Great Lakes).  This allowed more moisture from the Gulf of Mexico to move into the Great Lakes and eastern portions of the Upper Mississippi River Valley.  Much of Michigan and Wisconsin saw record to near record snow during the 2007-08 snowfall season.
