Thursday Afternoon and Night Radar Loops...Storm Reports and Rainfall Amounts

Several waves of strong to severe thunderstorms hit the area once again beginning Thursday afternoon, lingering into Thursday night.  See below for the different threats and impacts of these waves of storms.

Thursday Afternoon - First Wave Brings Strong Winds and Widespread Wind Damage

The first round of storms brought widespread damaging wind with a distinct bow echo signature on the radar data (seen below). The strongest winds are typically found where the radar echo "bows out", or pushes east the furthest in comparison to surrounding storms. Below the radar loop is a listing of storm related damage in the afternoon. Click the image for a larger, higher resolution loop in its own browser window.

Second Wave of Storms - Heavy Rain and Severe Weather Thursday Night

The storms on Thursday night contained extreme rainfall rates, sometimes in excess of 2 inches per hour. Training of the thunderstorms (thunderstorms moving over the same area repeatedly) occurred over portions of west central and southwestern Wisconsin during the overnight hours, leading to widespread rainfall amounts from 3 to 6 inches, with locally higher amounts, seen in the radar loops below. This led to flash flooding and overland flooding. Associated storm and rainfall amounts from these storms are listed below the radar loops.
