Seasonal Snowfall in La Crosse Highest Since 1996-97

Through December 9th, the official snow observer near La Crosse Municipal Airport had received 15.9 inches of snow for the 2008-09 snow season (which begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th).  This was 9.2 inches above the normal of 6.7 inches of snow.  This is the tenth largest seasonal snow total through December 9th and the most since the 1996-97 snow season when 16.2 inches of snow fell.  The largest total through December 9th was 37.3 inches back in the 1991-92 snow season.  During the 2007-08 snow season, La Crosse had a foot of snow by this date.

While a snowy start to a snow season is not always an harbinger to an above normal snow season, it is usually a sign of things to come.  Looking at the 20 greatest total seasonal snowfall totals (excluding this year) through December 9th at La Crosse WI, 15 out of 20 (75 percent) ended up having an above normal snow season.  The five exceptions were the snow seasons of 1926-27(39.6"), 1947-48 (39.4"), 1957-58 (24.7"), 1959-60 (35.0"), and 2005-06 (39.8").  The graph below compares the seasonal snowfall through December 9th to the entire snowfall at La Crosse, WI.
