...A COLD...WET...AND SNOWY METEOROLOGICAL WINTER IN LA CROSSE WI...

DURING METEOROLOGICAL WINTER...DECEMBER 1 THROUGH FEBRUARY 28...
LA CROSSE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS COLDER THAN NORMAL...AND BOTH
PRECIPITATION AND SNOWFALL WAS ABOVE NORMAL.  THE INFORMATION BELOW
PROVIDES MORE DETAILS ON THESE STATISTICS.

TEMPERATURES - COLDEST METEOROLOGICAL WINTER SINCE 1981-82

FROM DECEMBER 1ST THROUGH FEBRUARY 28TH, THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE AT
LA CROSSE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT WAS 15.0 DEGREES.  THIS WAS 5.0 DEGREES
BELOW THE 1971-2000 AVERAGE OF 20.0 DEGREES.  THIS WAS THE COLDEST
WINTER SINCE THE WINTER OF 1981-82 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS
13.2 DEGREES.  THIS WINTER WAS THE 27TH COLDEST WINTER EVER RECORDED
IN LA CROSSE WISCONSIN.  TEMPERATURE RECORDS DATE BACK TO THE WINTER
OF 1872-73.  THE COLDEST WINTER OCCURRED BACK DURING THE WINTER OF
1872-73 WHEN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 8.4 DEGREES.

ABOVE THE WINTER NORMAL OF 3.41 INCHES.  THIS WAS NOT ENOUGH TO
ALLEVIATE THE MODERATE DROUGHT /D2/ WHICH HAS PERSISTED SINCE LATE
SUMMER 2008.

FROM DECEMBER 1ST THROUGH FEBRUARY 28TH...THE SNOW OBSERVER NEAR
LA CROSSE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT RECEIVED 50.5 INCHES OF SNOW.  THIS WAS
20 INCHES ABOVE THE NORMAL OF 30.5 INCHES.  THIS MADE IT THE FIFTH
SNOWIEST METEOROLOGICAL WINTER EVER RECORDED IN LA CROSSE.  THE
LARGEST SNOW TOTAL EVER RECORDED DURING A WINTER WAS 60.4 INCHES
BACK IN THE WINTER OF 1970-71. THE TABLE BELOW LISTS THE TEN
SNOWIEST WINTERS IN LA CROSSE WI.
