Temperatures...

During meteorological summer...the La Crosse Municipal Airport had an average temperature of 73.7 degrees.  This was 1.9 degrees warmer than the 1971-2000 normal of 71.8 degrees.  This ties 1983 for the 11th warmest summer.  The last time La Crosse was this warm during a summer was back in 2005 when the average temperature was 73.8 degrees.  The warmest summer occurred back in 1995 when the average temperature was 75.7 degrees.  The table below lists the top 20 warmest meteorological summers in La Crosse WI...

The temperatures this summer were fairly typical of a La Nina summer.  Since 1950, there have been 15 La Nina summers.  In eleven out of these fifteen, or 73.3 percent, the average temperature was above normal.  The only La Nina summers during this period that averaged below normal temperatures were 1950, 1971, 1974, and 1985.  In all four of these summers, the La Nina was weakening during the summer. However, this year, the La Nina was strengthing during the summer season.

Other temperature tidbits this summer...

The temperature reached or exceeded 90 degrees on eleven days.  This was the most since 2007 when there were fifteen days.  Normally, there are thirteen 90 degree days during a summer.

On August 5th, the low temperature fell to 59 degrees.  This was the first time since July 1st that temperature fell below 60 degrees.  The 35 day stretch was the fourth longest stretch of days with temperatures 60 degrees or greater, and the longest stretch since a 42-day (July 9 to August 19) stretch back in 1995.  The longest stretch ever recorded in La Crosse was a 43-day stretch (June 17 to July 19) back in 1921.

The temperature remained at or above 60 degrees on 74 days (80.3 percent of the days).  The only other time this has occurred in La Crosse was back in 1881.  Normally, there are only 52 days during the summer when the temperature remains at or above 60 degrees.

Precipitation...

During the meteorological summer, the La Crosse Municipal Airport received 20.93 inches of precipitation.  This was 8.40 inches wetter than the 1971-2000 normal of 12.53 inches.  This was the wettest summer on record, dating back to 1872.  The previous record was 20.32 inches back in 2007.

This La Nina summer was unusual, because they are typically drier than normal.  During the fifteen La Nina summers since 1950, ten (66.7 percent) had below normal precipitation.  Besides this summer, only 1950, 1973, 1998, and 1999 were wetter than normal.  The summers of 1973 and 1998 resembled this summer, because there was a quick transition from a strong El Nino (1.5 or greater Oceanic Nino Index) to a weak La Nina (-0.5 to -0.9 Oceanic Nino Index) to a moderate La Nina (-1.0 to -1.4 Oceanic Nino Index) by mid to late summer.

Temperatures...

During meteorological summer...the Rochester International Airport had an average temperature of 70.9 degrees.  This was 2.9 degrees warmer than the 1971-2000 normal of 68.0 degrees.  This was the ninth warmest summer.  The warmest summer occurred back in 1949 when the average temperature was 73.0 degrees.  The table below lists the top ten warmest meteorological summers in Rochester MN...
