The beginning of the month was active and unsettled with a few snow events…where 1.6 inches of snow fell in the first 4 days. A surge of arctic air followed and the coldest temperatures of the month were seen. Several persistent ridges of high pressure followed…keeping temperatures unseasonably warm for much of the second half of the month…and La Crosse had a “brown” Christmas for the first time since 2006. To end out the month…a weak system brought light freezing rain and some snow…though temperatures were still well above normal.

December began active and unsettled as a series of low pressure systems brought the first significant snow of the winter season to Rochester. Following these systems…a surge of Arctic air led to the coldest temperatures of the month…and 2 consecutive days of below zero temperatures were seen…on the 9th and 10th. Persistent ridges of high pressure brought unseasonably warm temperatures for the middle and latter parts of the month…keeping any snow producing systems well to the north. A few weak northwest flow events resulted in minor snow accumulations in the second half of the month…but these were quickly followed by continued warmth.

January is typically the coldest month of the year with an average temperature of 15.7 degrees. The average high is 23.6 degrees and the average low temperature is 7.7 degrees. The average daily high temperature is 24 degrees on the 1st…dips to 23 during the middle of the month…and ends up at 25 on the 31st. the average low temperature on the 1st is 9 degrees…drops to 7 degrees above zero on the 15th…and climbs up to 8 degrees on the 31st. normal precipitation for January is 0.86 inches…with 12.0 inches of snow.
