August 25-27, 2013 Heat Wave

Records Heat Indices Heat Index Climatology

An unusually late heat wave impacted the Upper Mississippi River Valley from Sunday, August 25th through Tuesday, August 27th.  High temperatures on each day ranged from the upper 80s through mid 90s and the dew points ranged from the upper 60s to mid 70s.  This resulted in heat indices ranging from 95 to 110 degrees.  A Heat Advisory was issued for all of southeast Minnesota, northeast Iowa, and from southwest into central Wisconsin from noon Sunday through midnight Tuesday night.  Due to the dry soils causing higher temperatures in the river valleys from the La Crosse and La Crescent areas north, the Heat Advisory was later upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning (3 AM Monday) for Buffalo, La Crosse, and Trempealeau counties in western Wisconsin; and Houston, Wabasha, and Winona counties in southeast Minnesota.
