...Slightly Above Normal Temperatures and Well Below Normal Precipitation During August at La Crosse Wisconsin...

The average monthly temperature for August at the La Crosse Municipal Airport was 73.1 degrees, which was 1.7 degrees above normal. The average high was 84.1 degrees, while the average low temperature was 62.1 degrees. The highest temperature during the month was 97 degrees, which occurred on the 26th. The lowest reading was 50 degrees and occurred on the 4th.

La Crosse received 1.04" of precipitation during the month of August which was 3.25" below normal. There were only 4 days of measurable rainfall, and the greatest 24 hour rainfall was 0.63" which occurred on the 11th.

Two major weather patterns dominated the Upper Mississippi River Valley during the month of August. The first half featured a cooler than normal regime characterized by northwest flow aloft, which kept major storm systems well to the south and east. In the first 18 days of the month, only 1 day had above normal temperatures. The majority of the monthly precipitation fell during this period as well. However, starting by the 3rd week in the month, a large scale change in the atmosphere brought more summer like temperatures and humidity to the area. Readings returned to above normal and the last week of the month featured an unusually late season heat wave. Warm southerly flow brought 6 consecutive days of 90 degree or greater high temperatures and overnight lows only in the mid to upper 70s. A total of 5 temperature records were established during this heat wave. However, little in the way of precipitation fell as storm tracks were mainly across northern Minnesota into northern Wisconsin.

The average temperature for September is 62.8 degrees. The normal high drops from 79 degrees on the 1st, to 67 degrees on the 30th. The normal low falls from 58 degrees on the 1st to 46 degrees on the 30th. La Crosse typically sees 1 day when the temperature reaches 90 degrees or greater during the month of September. The average high was 79.9 degrees, while the average low temperature was 59.8 degrees. The highest temperature during the month was 91 degrees, which occurred on the 26th. The lowest reading occurred on the 14th, and was 49 degrees. There were 3 days when the temperature reeached 90 degrees or greater.

Rochester received 1.80" of rainfall during the month. This was 2.72" below normal. There were only 7 days of measurable rainfall, and the greatest 24 hour rainfall was 0.75" which occurred on the 10th and 11th.
