Astronomical Summer was Warm and Dry for the Area

Astronomical summer (June 21st through September 21st) was warm and dry at both La Crosse, WI and Rochester, MN.  More details are listed below...

La Crosse, WI

Temperatures - 18th Warmest -

During astronomical summer...La Crosse Regional Airport had an average temperature of 72.4 degrees.  This was 1.7 degrees warmer than the 1981-2010 normal of 70.7 degrees.  This made it the 18th warmest summer.  The warmest summer occurred in 1936 with an average temperature of 74.5 degrees.  Five of the top 20 warmest summers have occurred since 2000 (2005 - 9th...2002 - 12th...2012 - 14th...2013 - 18th...and 2003 - 19th). 

Much of the summer heat occurred after August 18th.  From June 21st through August 18th...temperatures averaged 72.2 degrees which was 0.8 degrees colder than the 1981-2010 normal of 73 degrees.  Since August 18th...temperatures have averaged 72.9 degrees which was 6.1 degrees warmer than the 1981-2010 normal of 66.8 degrees.  Only 1947 (75.3 degrees) and 1948 (73.0 degrees) were warmer during this time period.

The average maximum temperature was 83.0 degrees.  This was 1.9 degrees warmer than the 1981-2010 normal of 81.1 degrees.

The average minimum temperature was 61.9 degrees.  This was 1.5 degrees warmer than the 1981-2010 normal of 60.4 degrees.

The warmest temperature was 98 degrees on July 17th and July 18th.

The coldest temperature was 45 degrees on September 13th and September 14th.

Precipitation -

During astronomical summer...La Crosse Regional Airport received 7.60 inches of precipitation.  This was 5.00 inches below the 1981-2010 normal of 12.60 inches.  Over half of this rain (3.98 inches) fell during the last 10 days of June.  Just 3.62 inches of rain has fallen since July 1st. Only 1976 (3.14 inches) was drier from July 1st through September 21st.

The combination of well-above normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation caused the area to develop a severe drought by mid-September.

Rochester, MN

Temperatures -

During astronomical summer...Rochester International Airport had an average temperature of 69.5 degrees.  This was 0.9 degrees warmer than the 1981-2010 normal of 68.6 degrees. 

Much of the summer heat occurred after August 18th.  From June 21st through August 18th...temperatures averaged 69.6 degrees which was 1.1 degrees colder than the 1981-2010 normal of 69.6 degrees.  Since August 18th...temperatures have averaged 69.4 degrees which was 4.6 degrees warmer than the 1981-2010 normal of 64.8 degrees.  Only 1947 (71.1 degrees)... 1948 (71.1 degrees)...and 1908 (69.4 degrees) were warmer during this time period.

The average maximum temperature was 79.5 degrees.  This was 0.9 degrees warmer than the 1981-2010 normal of 78.6 degrees.

The average minimum temperature was 59.6 degrees.  This was 0.9 degrees warmer than the 1981-2010 normal of 58.5 degrees.

The warmest temperature was 92 degrees on July 18th and September 9th.

The coldest temperature was 42 degrees on September 16th.

Precipitation -

During astronomical summer...Rochester International Airport received 10.47 inches of precipitation.  This was 2.64 inches below the 1981-2010 normal of 13.11 inches.  Over half of this rain (5.69 inches) fell during the last 10 days of June.  Just 4.68 inches of rain has fallen since July 1st. Only 4 years (1908 - 4.71 inches...1910 - 4.68 inches...1974 - 4.11 inches...and 1976 - 4.24 inches) were drier from July 1st through September 21st.

The combination of well-above normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation caused the area to develop a moderate drought by mid-September.
