October 2013 began unseasonably mild thanks to warm and moist southerly flow across much of the central plains. A potent early
autumn storm system brought widespread showers and thunderstorms beginning on the 3rd, and lasted until the 5th. In the wake of this
system, a dry and warm weather pattern set up across the area, providing a stretch of pleasant autumn days. A strong cold
front finally made a push through the upper midwest by the middle of the month, sending temperatures below normal. The first freeze
occurred in the 3rd week of the month, and a persistent area of low pressure kept temperatures 10 to nearly 20 degrees below normal for
several days. This pattern brought the first snow flakes of the season as well. Toward the the end of the month, temperatures
moderated to near normal as another storm system brought showers and isolated thunderstorms to the region on the 30th and 31st.

In the wake of this system, conditions became pleasant and dry. A strong cold front pushed into the area by the middle of the month, sending temperatures below normal for the first time. The weather pattern then flipped, and a broad area of low pressure settled across much of the Upper Midwest. Temperatures averaged 10 to nearly 20 degrees below normal during this stretch. The first significant freeze occurred during the 3rd week of the month, and the first snow flakes of the season were recorded as well. A total of 4 days had a trace of snowfall. Toward the end of the month, temperatures moderated to near normal. A storm system brought showers and isolated thunderstorms to the area on the 30th and 31st.
