Recent rainfall in southwestern North Dakota was sufficient to create concern with the Cannonball River near Breien. As the current hydrograph in blue and river forecast in green show the river is steadily rising. Minor flood stage is 10.0 feet on the Cannonball River at Breien. Although an initial forecast expected much of this runoff to hit the Breien area at about the same time and cresting near flood stage on Friday, the latest information suggests that the water will be spread out over a longer period of time. As a result of this change in timing the latest forecast expects the river to remain well within its natural banks and simply be abnormally high for this time of the year. The NWS will closely monitor this site and update the forecasts as new information comes available.
