It's that time of year again. The weather is beginning to warm-up and people are making plans to establish their gardens. However, it’s important to remember that although the days are getting warm, nighttime temperatures still can easily drop below freezing (32°) into early May. So, before planting your spring garden consider the chances of a killing freeze. The tables below display the average date of the last spring freeze for selected cities across Western and Central North Dakota. Also shown are the dates of the 10th , 50th, 70th and 90th percentiles for the final spring freeze. In order to interpret these percentiles, lets first consider the 90th percentile. This simply means that 9 out of every 10 years the final spring freeze will occur on or before the date shown. Likewise, the 10th percentile means that 1 out of every 10 years the final spring freeze will occur on or before the date shown. The same methods are used to interpret the 50th and the 70th percentiles.
