Summer 2010 Climate Summary

Bismarck
Temperatures during the summer of 2010 (defined as the months of June-July-August) averaged out to 69 degrees, which is 1 degree above the 1971 to 2000 climatological average. The warmth was due to the fact that the average low temperature was nearly 2 degrees above average, this ties the summers of 1881 and 1941 as being the 39th warmest on record.  All three months during the season were near to above average. The most notable month was August, when the average temperature was 71.1 degrees, which was 2.1 degrees above average. This ranked August of 2010 as being the 33rd warmest on record.  There were two days of 100 degree temperatures during the summer season at Bismarck. The warmest of which was 104 degrees.  The lowest temperature during the summer season was 39 degrees on both the 2nd and the 14th of June. 

Precipitation for the 2010 summer season at Bismarck airport was 8.23 inches which was 1.65 inches above the 1971 to 2000 average.  This ranked as the 52nd wettest summer on record.

 Williston
Temperatures for the 2009 summer season (defined as the months of June-July-August) at the Williston airport averaged 67.2 degrees which was near the 1971 to 2000 average.  However, the average high and low temperatures were anything but average. The average high temperature was 79.9 degrees, which was 1.3 degrees below average. In contrast, the average low temperature was 1.4 degrees warmer than average. There were no 100 degree days in Williston. However, there were 14 days during the season when the mercury topped 90 degrees. On average, this feat is achieved on about 20 days during the summer. The highest temperature recorded during the season was 97 degrees on the 22nd and 26th of August. The lowest temperature during the summer season was 41 degrees on the 14th of June. 

 Precipitation for the 2010 summer season at Williston airport was 8.81 inches which was 2.69 inches above the 1971 to 2000 average. This ranked as being the 22nd wettest summer on record at Williston. Although this was not record breaking, the Image below displays the summer season rainfall distribution at Williston. You can see that overall rainfall during the 2010 summer season was abnormally high. A majority of the rainfall occurred during the month of July, when 3.91 inches was measured. This made the month of July the 12th wettest July in recorded history. Similarly, August proved to be the 25th wettest on record with 2.70 inches.

Dickinson

Temperatures for the 2010 summer season (defined as the months of June-July-August) at the Dickinson airport averaged 65.6 degrees which was 1.8 degrees below the 1971 to 2000 climatological average of 67.4 degrees.  This ranked the 2010 summer season as being tied with 3 other years for being the 40th coolest summer in recorded history.  All three months during the season were either at or below average. The most notable months were June and July.  During these two months the average monthly temperatures were in excess of 2 degrees below the 1971 to 2000 average. The month of July was tied with July of 1909 as being the 26th coolest on record.  With a cool summer, it is really no surprise that no 100 degree temperatures were experienced at Dickinson. The last time no 100 degree temperatures were experienced was in 2009. There were only 14 days during the season when the mercury topped 90 degrees. The highest temperature recorded during the season was 98 degrees on the 22nd of August. The lowest temperature during the summer season was 39 degrees on the 2nd, 14th and 15th of June. 

Precipitation for the 2010 summer season at Dickinson airport was 6.01 inches which was 0.75 inches below the 1971 to 2000 average. There were no days during the summer when the max temperature hit 100 degrees.  However, there were 11 days during the season when the mercury topped 90 degrees. The highest temperature recorded during the season was 98 degrees on the 22nd of August.  The lowest temperature during the summer season was 41 degrees on the 2nd of June. 

Precipitation for the 2010 summer season at Minot airport was 10.25 inches which was 2.70 inches above the 1971 to 2000 average. The Image below displays the summer season rainfall distribution at Minot. Summer rainfall was in the much above category.  The wettest month was June when 5.98 inches of rain was reported.

The highest temperature recorded during the season was 94 degrees on the 22nd of August.  The lowest temperature during the summer season was 43 degrees on the 2nd of June. 

Precipitation for the 2010 summer season at Jamestown airport was only 7.85 inches which was near the 1971 to 2000 average. The Image below shows that precipitation was in the typical range for the summer season.
