The Standing Rock Nation was recognized as “StormReady” on September 9, 2010. A recognition ceremony was held with Tribal officials and NWS (National Weather Service) officials from Aberdeen, South Dakota, and Bismarck, North Dakota, on November 16, at Tribal Headquarters in Ft. Yates. About 95 people were in attendance for the ceremony. (Photo below)
Part of the Standing Rock Nation is in South Dakota, covered by the Aberdeen NWS office, and part is in North Dakota, and falls under the Bismarck NWS office.
Standing Rock is the ninth (9th) reservation recognized StormReady. There are 310 reservations in the Unites States. This is quite an accomplishment for residents of the reservation, Tribal officials, and the NWS.
The United States is the most severe weather-prone country on Earth. Each year, on average, the United States in impacted by 10,000 thunderstorms, 2,500 floods, 1,000 tornadoes, and about 10 hurricanes. Every person is impacted, one way or another, and as was proven in 2010, the people of Standing Rock are no exception. We cannot stop severe weather from occurring, it is inevitable. We can however, mitigate the damage and loss of life, and the "StormReady" program is designed to do just that.
"StormReady" is a NWS program that helps communities, like Standing Rock, implement procedures to reduce the potential for disastrous weather-related consequences. StormReady encourages emergency managers to take a proactive approach to improve local hazardous weather operations and public awareness. The StormReady program also improves the timeliness and effectiveness of hazardous weather warnings issued by the NWS and provides recommendations and guidelines by which emergency managers can improve hazardous weather operations.
"StormReady" does not mean stormproof! "StormReady" means that Standing Rock is at a high state of readiness to deal with weather hazards when they strike.
