SUNDAY EVENING...

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS CONDUCTED A STORM DAMAGE
SURVEY IN GRANT COUNTY TODAY. IT REVEALED THAT A TORNADO DAMAGED
FARMSTEADS SUNDAY EVENING.

SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF ELGIN.

PATH WIDTH...JUST UNDER A HALF MILE WIDE (AT ITS WIDEST)

TIME...830 PM MDT TO 845 PM MDT

AN EF2 TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN 8 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF ELGIN...
GRANT COUNTY...AROUND 830 PM MDT AND MOVED NORTH-NORTHEAST. IT
LIFTED 3 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF ELGIN...AT AROUND 845 PM MDT.

IT WAS ON THE GROUND FOR 15 MINUTES...AND COVERED A PATH LENGTH
OF AROUND 6 MILES. THE TORNADO WAS NEARLY A HALF MILE WIDE AT ITS
MAXIMUM WIDTH. NO FEWER THAN 4 FARMSTEADS WERE DAMAGED ALONG THE
PATH.

THE WORST DAMAGE WAS AROUND 6 MILES SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF ELGIN WHERE
THE TORNADO WAS NEARLY A HALF MILE WIDE AND EVERY BUILDING ON THE
FARMSTEAD WAS DAMAGED...SMALLER ONES COMPLETELY DESTROYED. IT
SNAPPED TREES AND WOODEN POWER POLES. ROOFS WERE TORN FROM THE FARM
HOUSE AND OUTBUILDINGS AND SOME WALLS COLLAPSED. PROJECTILES WERE
DRIVEN INTO THE SIDES OF BUILDINGS...AN AUTOMOBILE WAS MOVED...AND
FARM EQUIPMENT WAS PICKED UP AND CARRIED. A 2X4 SMASHED THROUGH THE
REAR WINDOW OF A PICKUP TRUCK...AND CAME THROUGH THE FRONT
WINDSHIELD. DEBRIS FROM THIS FARMSTEAD WAS STREWN THROUGH FIELDS 2
MILES AWAY. DAMAGE WAS CONSISTENT WITH EF2.

AT LEAST 3 OTHER FARMSTEADS TO THE NORTH-NORTHEAST OF THE WORST
DAMAGE WERE IMPACTED. DAMAGE ON THE NEXT 2 FARMS WAS CONSISTENT WITH
EF1...AND ON THE FARTHEST NORTH ONE...EFO. THIS SHOWS THE TORNADO
WAS WEAKENING AS IT MOVED CLOSER TO ELGIN.

THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE IS USED TO RATE TORNADO DAMAGE. FROM THAT
WIND SPEEDS ARE DETERMINED. WIND SPEEDS ASSOCIATED WITH TORNADO
RATINGS ARE...

EF1...86 TO 110 MPH
EF2...111 TO 135 MPH
EF3...136 TO 165 MPH
EF4...166 TO 200 MPH
EF5...201 MPH AND HIGHER
