Wind Damage Assessment in Dickey County 7/10/2011

...PRELIMINARY DAMAGE ASSESSMENT IN DICKEY COUNTY...

A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DAMAGE ASSESSMENT TEAM INVESTIGATED
STORM DAMAGE ACROSS PORTIONS OF DICKEY COUNTY THIS MONDAY
AFTERNOON. FROM MONANGO TO FULLERTON TO OAKES...WIDESPREAD MATURE
HARDWOOD TREES WERE SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. THOUSANDS OF ACRES OF
CROPS WERE DESTROYED BY WINDS AND WIND DRIVEN HAIL. THIS DAMAGE IS
CONSISTENT WITH 100 MPH STRAIGHT LINE WINDS. HAIL THE SIZE OF
QUARTERS OR 1 INCH WERE REPORTED. THERE WAS NO INDICATION OR PHOTO
EVIDENCE OF A TORNADO. THE HIGHEST ESTIMATED WIND DAMAGE OCCURRED
IN MONANGO WHERE A LARGE HARDWOOD TREE WAS SNAPPED 15 FEET ABOVE
THE GROUND WITH A DIAMETER OF 22 INCHES AT THE SNAP POINT. THIS
DAMAGE IS CONSISTENT WITH 125 MPH STRAIGHT LINE WINDS.

IN OAKES...ONE THIRD OF THE AIRPORT HANGERS WERE DESTROYED. PARTS
OF THE STRUCTURES WERE LOFTED 1 MILE TO THE EAST SOUTHEAST. ALONG
THE SAME TRAJECTORY AS THE LOFTED HANGER DEBRIS...8 NEW POWER
POLES WERE SNAPPED. THIS DAMAGE IS CONSISTENT WITH 125 MPH
STRAIGHT LINE WINDS.

ONE MILE SOUTHEAST OF OAKES...A 200 FOOT AM RADIO STATION TOWER WAS
DESTROYED. A PIVOT IRRIGATER WAS OVERTURNED IN BETWEEN THE HANGER
AND THE SNAPPED POLES. THIS DAMAGE IS CONSISTENT WITH 120-125 MPH
STRAIGHT LINE WINDS.

FURTHER DAMAGE ASSESSMENTS ARE ON GOING IN DICKEY COUNTY THIS
MONDAY EVENING.
