River Ice Forming In The Bismarck And Mandan Area

...RIVER ICE FORMING IN THE BISMARCK AND MANDAN AREA OF MISSOURI RIVER... THE ADVENT OF COLDER TEMPERATURES STARTING LAST WEEKEND HAS RESULTED IN SHEETS OF ICE BEING FORMED ON THE MISSOURI RIVER AND PASSING THROUGH THE BISMARCK AND MANDAN AREA. ICE HAS BEEN COLLECTING IN THE BENDS OF THE RIVER DOWNSTREAM OF THE SCHMIDT BOTTOMS BOAT RAMP. THIS ICE IS CAUSING THE RIVER TO RISE AND HAS RESULTED IN TWO SHARP INCREASES OVER THE PAST 24 HOURS...FOR A TOTAL OF ROUGHLY 3 FEET OVER THE PAST 24 HOURS. AT THIS POINT THE RIVER WOULD HAVE TO RISE ANOTHER 3 FEET TO CREATE THE SAME RIVER LEVELS AS WAS COMMON DURING JANUARY AND FEBRUARY. THE NATURE OF THIS ICE RESTRICTED FLOW IN THE RIVER IS NOT ALARMING...BUT DOES WARRANT CLOSE MONITORING. IF ANYONE OBSERVES UNUSUALLY HIGH WATER...THEY ARE ENCOURAGED TO REPORT THEIR OBSERVATIONS TO THEIR LOCAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT FOR RELAY TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE.
