.....DECEMBER 2014 SLIGHTLY WARMER AND WETTER THAN NORMAL.....

 

WEATHER WAS UNEVENTFUL FOR MUCH OF THE MONTH WITH MILD AND DRY WEATHER THE FIRST THREE WEEKS OF DECEMBER. HOWEVER...A COUPLE OF STORM SYSTEMS DID BRING SOME LIGHT SNOW TO DENVER ON THE 14TH AND 16TH. ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES WERE RECORDED 22 OUT OF THE FIRST 25 DAYS OF THE MONTH. THE WEATHER TURNED WETTER AND MUCH COLDER THE LAST WEEK OF THE MONTH AS A SERIES OF STORM SYSTEMS AND ARCTIC COLD FRONTS MOVED ACROSS THE STATE.

 

THE FIRST STORM SYSTEM MOVED INTO COLORADO CHRISTMAS DAY BRINGING MUCH COLDER TEMPERATURES AND HEAVY SNOW TO NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHEASTERN COLORADO. THIS SYSTEM PRODUCED 4 TO 8 INCHES OF SNOW ALONG THE FRONT RANGE URBAN CORRIDOR...WITH OVER A FOOT OF SNOW IN SOME FOOTHILL LOCATIONS. DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT REPORTED 5.1 INCHES OF SNOW FROM THE AFTERNOON OF THE 25TH THROUGH THE EVENING OF THE 26TH...WITH 3.4 INCHES FALLING ON CHRISTMAS DAY. THIS MAKES CHRISTMAS DAY OF 2014 THE THIRD SNOWIEST IN DENVER WEATHER HISTORY. THE ONLY TWO YEARS THAT HAD MORE SNOW ON CHRISTMAS DAY WERE 2007 WITH 7.4 INCHES AND 1894 WITH 6.4 INCHES.

 

BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES CONTINUED THE DAYS AFTER CHRISTMAS...AS A COUPLE STORM SYSTEMS AND ASSOCIATED ARCTIC COLD FRONTS MOVED ACROSS COLORADO. SNOW AND BITTER COLD TEMPERATURES MOVED INTO NORTHEASTERN COLORADO ON THE 29TH...WITH 5.4 INCHES OF SNOW MEASURED AT DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. THE ARCTIC AIRMASS REMAINED ENTRENCHED OVER THE AREA ON THE 30TH...WITH RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES SET AT MANY LOCATIONS. THE HIGH TEMPERATURE AT DIA ONLY MANAGED TO REACH 1 DEGREE F WHICH IS A NEW RECORD LOW MAX FOR THE DATE. ON THE EVENING OF THE 30TH...THE TEMPERATURE PLUMMETED TO 19 DEGREES BELOW ZERO WHICH SET A RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE FOR THE DATE AS WELL.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE AT DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER WAS 31.3 DEGREES F WHICH WAS 1.3 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. DECEMBER OF 1933 WAS THE WARMEST DECEMBER ON RECORD...WITH AN AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 43.8 DEGREES F.  THE COLDEST DECEMBER ON RECORD WAS 17.5 DEGREES F BACK IN 1983. THERE WERE 5 DAYS IN WHICH THE TEMPERATURE DID NOT EXCEED 32 DEGREES F...AND 2 DAYS WITH LOW TEMPERATURES AT OR BELOW ZERO DEGREES F. THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS 66 DEGREES WHICH OCCURRED ON THE 12TH. THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE OF THE MONTH WAS -19 DEGREES BELOW ZERO ON THE MORNING OF THE 30TH.
