PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DENVER CO

...PRECIPITATION DATA FOR MARCH 26 ADJUSTED DUE TO A POSSIBLE GAGE
MALFUNCTION AT THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT...

THE PRECIPITATION MEASURING DEVICE AT THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL
AIRPORT APPEARS TO HAVE MALFUNCTIONED DURING THE MARCH 26TH
BLIZZARD.  THE AUTOMATED GAGE FAILED TO CONTINUE TO MEASURE AFTER IT
ACCUMULATED 0.16 INCH OF LIQUID.  THE GAGE CONVERTS WEIGHT TO WATER
CONTENT.

THERE IS ANOTHER SNOW/PRECIPITATION MEASURING SITE ON THE EAST SIDE
OF THE AIRPORT.  BASED ON THEIR SNOW AND PRECIPITATION EQUIVALENT
READINGS...THE PRECIPITATION FOR THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
WAS ADJUSTED TO BE MORE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SNOW AMOUNT REGISTERED
IN AND AROUND THE AIRPORT.

THE VALUE THAT WAS SUBSTITUTED FOR THE ERRONEOUS 0.16 WAS 0.63 INCH
AND THAT VALUE WAS DERIVED FROM AN AVERAGE OF SURROUNDING
PRECIPITATION MEASURING SITES.

THE CHANGE WAS AUTHORIZED BY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CENTRAL REGION
HEADQUARTERS IN KANSAS CITY.
