Aurora Tornado Rated an EF1 (with pictures)

In the afternoon of Sunday June 7, 2009 a tornado touched down in southeast Aurora south of Buckley Airport and moved south southeast across open fields, some residential areas, and the Southlands Mall. Damage assessments were conducted Sunday and Monday, and homes and apartments suffered window damage, minor roof damage and there were a few broken garage doors. The Southlands Mall had some roof and window damage, and wall damage to one of its restaurants. One car was flipped by the wind. A construction trailer north of the mall was torn apart. South of the mall, Lowe's encountered some roof damage, and lightweight sheds and other structures destroyed. Based on a damage assessment based on the Enhanced Fujita scale, this tornado was rated an EF1, with estimated wind speeds of around 100 mph. The EF1 scale ranges from 86 to 110 mph. Other tornadoes that occurred on June 7th will be rated later this week.
